Cabrières, near Nîmes, Uzès and Avignon in Southern France
1 or 2 bedrooms, each sleeping 4 to 6 people
Mas des Petits Loups
The Mas des Petits Loups is on the outskirts of the peaceful little village of Cabrières, about 15 minutes from Nîmes and the airport and 30 minutes from Avignon. Each of the seven cottages has a private terrace and is set around the pool in a scented Mediterranean garden. Ideal at any time of year, the gites are perfect for couples, family holidays or for a group of friends travelling together, and can be taken together for large parties. We also have a chambres d’hotes Bed and Breakfast room.
Some of the loveliest places in Provence are here; the Pont du Gard, the Roman towns of Nîmes and Arles, with its association with the painter Vincent Van Gogh, the ancient town of Avignon and its bridge made famous by the nursery rhyme, all less than half an hour away. Saint Rémy de Provence, the Uzège Valley and the Alpilles hills are within reasonable driving distance, as is the vast wildlife reserve of the Camargue on the Mediterranean coast, where you can see flocks of pink flamingos and migrant birds, and sometimes herds of wild horses and bulls. And there are numerous places where you can stop, sample and buy local Côtes du Rhône wines.
The cottages have been carefully situated amongst the olive trees and palms and designed with comfort in mind. Each one has a corner kitchen, a sofa bed, bathroom and one or two bedrooms and a small private terrace equipped with table and chairs where you can eat and relax. The pool is there to enjoy whenever you like, children’s games are available on request and a cot can be provided. WiFi Internet is available.
There are endless places to walk or cycle, bicycles can be hired locally, quad racing, tennis courts and, a choice of golf courses, including a popular 9-hole golf course in Uzés, which is about 20 minutes from here. The town has a timeless charm and attracts many who like its relaxed atmosphere. Café life takes place in and around the main square, where friends meet to eat and exchange news. Market day is every Saturday morning.
The Pont du Gard is a remarkable 1st century Roman aqueduct, an extraordinary piece of engineering, romantic and humbling at the same time. Ancient Avignon (35 km) lies on the banks of the Rhône and has a lovely southern air about it. There is a greater choice of shops and restaurants and the town has several festivals and events throughout the year, including an international theatre festival in July.
A day can easily be spent just walking around seeing the riches of Arles. They are everywhere. The Roman obelisk in the place de la République made from Egyptian stone, the church of St Trophime with its famous façade and cloisters around an enchanting garden, the remarkably well preserved amphitheatre or the Van Gogh museum.
Nîmes has an 18-hole golf course and lots of shops and restaurants. The city has some excellent museums and a Roman amphitheatre, not as large as the one in Arles, but still used for various sporting events. Try to see the ornamental 18th century gardens in the quai de la Fontaine, which also has a ruined Temple of Diana. The Tour Magne nearby, an octagonal watchtower built in the 1st century, has wonderful views from the top.
