Romantic Chateau Cottage in the Loire Valley
Saint Aignan, between Tours and Blois, in the Loir-et-Cher
2 bedrooms, sleeps up to 4 people
Château de Saint Aignan is a privately owned country estate in the heart of the Loire Valley that has been in our family since the 11th century. It lies in fifty acres of wooded parkland and gardens, overlooking the River Cher between Tours and Blois. The Gatehouse cottage is at the entrance to the chateau and has recently been renovated to provide our guests with elegant surroundings and modern comforts.
The quiet medieval town of Saint Aignan is a short walk from the Gatehouse and has a choice of shops and restaurants. The Romanesque church has beautiful frescoes in the crypt. Some of the loveliest of the Loire châteaux are within easy driving distance and Beauval Animal Park, much loved by children, is 2 km away. Paris is just over 2 hours from here.
The cottage combines an harmonious charm and originality with a warm, relaxed atmosphere and makes an ideal base for a family or for friends travelling together, or as a romantic retreat for a few days.
The sitting room has comfortable armchairs and a sofa, a fireplace, a flat screen television and a selection of books and various games.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed including an oven and hob, microwave, fridge, washing machine, iron, coffee maker, kettle and toaster. There is a dining area and the kitchen opens onto a small interior courtyard with outside furniture and a barbecue.
There are two double rooms and two shower rooms with heated towel rails. A hairdryer is provided. Grenat is a sunny room with a king size double bed, an armoire and a writing table with a view towards the château and the valley. Sable is a twin room with an armoire overlooking the park. A cot can be provided on request.
To the west of the château, a vast private park extends across the hillside. Carefully maintained over the centuries, the park has a large variety of specimen trees and is a reserve for native wildlife and plants. There are peaceful walks through alleyways of trees dappled with sunlight and with a bit of luck, in the early morning or at sunset, you may encounter a pair of roe deer grazing on the great lawn.
Saint Aignan itself dates mainly from the Renaissance period with mullioned windows and steep roofs. The tower and outer walls date from the 11th century.
Within 5 minutes is a swimming pool, tennis courts and a lake with water sports. The golf course is 25 minutes from here and there is a Polo Club 20 minutes away.
Of the chateaux, Chenonceau is a must. Amboise is one of the oldest of the royal residences and Chambord is a massive palace with 440 rooms and almost as many chimneys, Blois was a favourite of Louis XII. Beauregard, Montrésor, Cheverny and the Tintin museum are others. Le Clos Lucé in Amboise, home of Leonardo da Vinci has working models of many of his inventions scattered about the house and gardens.
The International Festival of Parks and Gardens is held at Chaumont-sur-Loire between June and October, and also arranges tours to the lovely classical gardens at Valmer, Villandry, la Bourdaisière and to the Priory of Saint-Cosme, which has a gorgeous collection of roses.
