Fleur de Lys is a delightful traditional maison bourgeois in Ansac sur Vienne, built in 1835 with a large garden overlooking a 10 x 5 metre swimming pool and a children's play area, where we have a double room and family suites Bed and Breakfast, all with television, DVD and en suite bathrooms. Ansac is a small village on the banks of the Vienne river about 2.5 km upstream of the beautiful medieval market town of Confolens, almost in the centre of the triangle between Angoulême (40 minutes), Limoges (50 minutes) and Poitiers (1 hour).
The house is a family home with guest rooms designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. Breakfast is included and there is a also large guest dining room with a kitchen equipped with free tea and coffee making facilities, a cooker, fridge and dishwasher, for unlimited use for guests. The lounge area has satellite television and we have a good selection of mainstream and children's DVD's and books, which guests are welcome to borrow. Excellent lunches and evening meals can be arranged with the owners of our local café, on request.
The Grand Double is a large room with a Queen size four poster bed, decorated in the 'Toile' style with enough room for a child's bed or cot if required. The bathroom has a hydo-massage shower, wc and an illuminated vanity unit.
The Upper Family Room is a double room with an adjoining twin room and a shower room with a hydo-massage shower, wc and vanity unit, both overlooking the garden.
The Lower Family Room is a large room with a Louis XIV style double bed and a pair of bunk beds overlooking the garden and pool. It has an en-suite bathroom (bath with shower, wc and an illuminated vanity unit).
The Family Studio is a charming, large attic room with vaulted ceilings and exposed oak beams containing a double bed, a pair of bunk beds, a desk and wardrobes. It has an en suite shower room, wc and an illuminated vanity unit.
All the rooms have French television and DVD players and suit singles, couples or family and friends travelling together. The garden and pool are there to be enjoyed by everyone. Ansac has a couple of café bars and an excellent boulangerie/patisserie. Confolens has a greater choice of shops, cafés and restaurants. We also have a selection of bicycles, which can be borrowed to explore local lanes and woods.
The area offers a wide range of sporting and leisure activities within a 30 minute drive: Rambling, birdwatching and cycling, riding stables, fishing and swimming (5 minutes) or kayaking and boating. Confolens has a well established equestrian centre, tennis courts and a 2 km circuit training course in a park. Fishing is popular locally and for a nominal fee, a permit can be obtained to fish the rivers and lakes. For more serious coarse fishing, there are many private carp lakes locally. There are 18-hole golf courses in St Junien (20 minutes) and Angoulême (40 minutes).
France's 'Lake District', Les Lacs du Haute Charente (30 minutes), has lakes with beaches, watersports and a woodland adventure park. Confolens is famous for its annual Festival of Folk Music and Dance, held in the middle of August with troupes from as far afield as Peru and Indonesia.
A Velo-Rail system runs from Confolens to Manot, through Ansac. This involves up to five people on a cart, with two pedalling along the disused railway track. The 15 km trip takes about two and a half hours, so it helps if at least two of the party have fit legs!
The Vallée des Singes is home to 30 species of primate, from the tiniest squirrel monkey to a family of gorillas. You can enter into most of the enclosures (don't worry, not the gorillas!) and watch them feed and interact. A fantastic day out less than an hour away.
A whole variety of charming chateaux are within easy reach, such as Rochechouart(with nearby roman ruins), Rochebrune, La Rochefoucauld and the stunning hilltop ruins at St Germain de Confolens. The area also has many fine examples of medieval churches.
Angoulême is known as the gateway to the Southwest. The town is magnificently lit up almost every night and hosts a wide range of lively cultural events. Among them, is an annual International Cartoon Festival, attracting over 200,000 cartoon and comic strip enthusiasts every year. Every September it also holds the Circuit des Remparts, the only vintage car rally outside Monaco held inside a town, which attracts entrants from all over Europe.
Poitiers has lots to see in terms of art and architecture including the impressive Notre-Dame cathedral. The centre of Poitiers has a warren of pedestrian streets and is a lovely town for shopping and wandering around. Just north of Poitiers is Futuroscope, the largest science and technology park in Europe, and a feast for the senses. Fun for both children and adults.
Limoges is one of the great towns of central France and has been making fine porcelaine since the 18th century. The Adrien-Dubouché museum has a superb collection and the museum in the elegant Archbishop's palace and gardens has an exquisite collection of enamels.
