Holiday Homes In France
Delightful Chambres d'Hotes in Normandy
Near St Lô, 30 minutes from the D-Day Landing Beaches
2 double bedrooms and a family room with bathrooms
Our chambres d'hôtes bed and breakfast is in a quiet hamlet on the edge of the Marais, a wonderful wildlife reserve, 30 kms south of Bayeux and 4 km from St Lô. The town has a variety of shops, cafés and a choice of restaurants to suit all pockets, with one or two in the lower town by the river, which are especially pleasant to linger in over a long lunch. On the Bayeux road just outside the town centre is the Haras, the National Stud, one of the biggest in France, which raises all breeds of horses and produces some of France's finest champions. It has events throughout the year and a riding school.
The area around here is scattered with lovely manor houses, villages and churches, forests and a pastoral landscape where horses and dairy cows graze. South of St Lô, the Vire river has some good trout fishing and there are some fine views, particularly at Les Rochers de Ham near Torigny-sur-Vire, where you can visit the château of the Breton family from which the Monaco princes are descended. We have lots of local information here and bicycles you can borrow.
Being keen gardeners, we have created a garden with a riot of colourful plants and flowers, stone steps and a fountain, with quiet shady spots under the trees. The terrace beside the lawn has garden furniture and a barbecue and on fine days, a generous breakfast that includes amongst other things, home made jams and pastries, is served there.
The salon is cosily furnished with comfortable sofas and country furniture and the dining room has many old family pieces. Each of the bedrooms is named after somewhere in this part of Normandy.
La Saintloise is decorated in tones of rose and blue and has a double and a single bed, with a private bathroom.
La Granvillaise is a romantic double bedroom decorated in pastel tones, which also has an en-suite bathroom.
La Coutancaise is a large, harmonious bedroom with two double beds and a bathroom with shower, ideal for a family.
A small kitchen with a fridge and a microwave is available if you want to make a light lunch or snack and also has a washing machine and dryer.
The Normandy Landing Beaches, Omaha and Utah Beach, St Laurent, Vierville, Colleville-sur-Mer and others, with their beautifully kept monuments and museums, have a special meaning for many people. Bayeux and its famous tapestry depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and the copper foundry town of Villedieu, which makes bells of all sizes, are all within an easy drive.
The lively town of Granville is less than an hour's drive away where you can spend the day on the beach and there are good restaurants and entertainment's, including a casino. From here, there are daily ferries during the summer to the islands of Jersey and Guernsey, which takes an hour.
The remarkable Benedictine abbey of Mont-St-Michel, perched on a huge rock that can only be reached at low tide or by boat, is perhaps at its most romantic during spring and early summer or in the autumn. The walk around it and the sea air may work up an appetite for a large soufflé-like omelette at one of the restaurants in the village.
