Traditional Charentaise Gite in Western France
Aigrefeuille d'Aunis, between La Rochelle and Rochefort-sur-Mer
3 bedrooms, sleeps 6 people
The gite is part of our house set in the beautiful countryside of the Charente Maritime, between La Rochelle and Rochefort-sur-Mer, 15 minutes from the beach at Chatelaillon. It has recently been completely renovated and furnished with country furniture in keeping with the period of the house and there is a large garden for children to run around in. The house is just outside the village of Aigrefeuille d'Aunis, which has a choice of shops and a large supermarket and is pleasant to walk to, to buy baguettes and croissants for breakfast. The village has a large lake with good fishing and sporting facilities, including a swimming pool.
La Rochelle has a great combination of beauty and vitality and a wonderful ambience. The main streets are full of arcaded Renaissance houses, some good shops and a marvellous daily market. There is a superbly well designed aquarium there and several interesting museums, in particular the model railway museum and the mechanical toy museum, which children love. The old port is guarded by three medieval towers and is full of visiting yachts and fishing boats, artists on the quay side and smart cafés. The coast along here is popular with the sailing fraternity, which adds to the generally cheerful cosmopolitan atmosphere and of course, there are the beaches.
The ground floor of the gite has a living room and dining room with television, video and CD player and a kitchen with a large table at the heart of the house. It is fully equipped with everything needed, including a new kitchen range, dishwasher, fridge and microwave. There is also a linen room with a washing machine and a shower room and toilet.
The three bedrooms are upstairs. The first has a double and a single bed and is furnished in a very English style. The second is a double room furnished with a lovely old chest of drawers and wardrobe. The third bedroom is a children's room, decorated for children, which has two single beds. The bathroom has both bath and shower.
Outside in the garden is large table under the shade of the old lime and chestnut trees. There is nothing better than to sit out there and relax in the evenings with a glass of wine, before a barbecue.
There is a golf course 10 minutes away and three others (9 and 18-holes) roughly 25 minutes from here. The beach at Chatelaillon is vast and there is also a spa, where you can have relaxing treatments.
Punting slowly through the Marais Poitevin is an enchanting experience. Known as the Venice Verte, it is a network of waterways, built by monks in the 13th century. The area is at its loveliest inland where woodland overhangs the mossy waters and there are places where you can stop for a picnic. This part of the Charente is also famous for its Romanesque churches, particularly the one at Saint Pierre d'Aulnay
The Ile de Ré is an island just off La Rochelle, scattered with whitewashed houses covered in roses with sandy beaches and hidden coves around the coast. Oysters and mussels are in abundance, delicious with local white wine or a pineau. The little roads that criss-cross the island have been designed specifically with cyclists in mind. The Ile d'Oléron is connected to the mainland by a three kilometre bridge and makes a wonderful day out, taking you into another world. Well known for its oyster beds, the island has enormous unspoiled charm and splendid beaches. Aix and Gléron are other little off shore islands.
