12th Century Manor in the Dordogne
Carlux, near Sarlat, in Southwest France
7 bedrooms, sleeps up to 14 people. With pool.

Manoir de Reignac

Reignac is set in its own valley, surrounded by formal gardens, in one of the loveliest parts of South West France. The oldest part of this small private château dates from the 12th century and over the years it has been added to and maintained by the successive families who have lived here. There is a quality of life here, old values still exist together with the benefits of modern living and people are open and friendly.

The house is just outside the village of Carlux, about 15 km from the medieval town of Sarlat, close to many of the ancient towns and villages of the Périgord and Quercy and the famous caves of Lascaux and Les Eyzies with their extraordinary prehistoric paintings.

Reignac has much charm and originality, is furnished with old family furniture and equipped with all the comforts of home. There is a large sitting room with a big fireplace and a dining area and a television room with DVD and hi-fi. There is also a downstairs shower room and wc. The kitchen and back kitchen are fully equipped with everything needed and include a large oven and hob, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, a microwave and kettle, two fridges and two freezers.

Stairs lead via the round tower up to the first floor, which has a large sitting room with a huge fireplace and two of the seven bedrooms. The first is a double room with shower, the second is a double room with a separate bathroom. There is also another wc. The second floor has four twin rooms, a double bedroom with a wash basin, a shower room and a bathroom. Two cots are available on request.

The gardens and woods are yours to enjoy and there is outside furniture and a barbecue. The pool has Roman steps and is secured to ensure the safety of young children.

Visitors Book comment:
"Thank you so much for our marvellous visit to the Dordogne. The manoir was magnificent, far more beautiful than the photographs. It was ideally placed to see the area and very comfortable for the whole of our large family. My parents in law were overjoyed, delighted with their room and took great pleasure in the entire house and gardens."

The Area

The riding stables in Carlux, are within walking distance of the house and caters for riders of all levels of experience. You can hire horses for an hour or two or for the day, and the stables organise accompanied treks through the countryside. There are two excellent golf courses at Souillac and Vitrac, about a 15 minute drive from here. This part of the Dordogne is ideal for canoeing and rowing, which gives a wonderfully different perspective of this lovely river valley. Carlux is also on the GR6 rambling route.

The Saturday morning market in Sarlat is famous, full of chatter and colour, the stalls spreading into the narrow streets around the market square. The town is full of medieval to 17th century buildings and is pleasant to wander through, particularly in the early and later part of the year when it is quiet. The square in front of the Cathedral is a good place to stop and sit on a cafe terrace to watch the world go by and there are several restaurants to choose from. It also holds several music and theatre events through the summer months.

Domme, perched high above the river valley, is a 13th century bastide village with pretty honey coloured houses leading to the market place and to a point looking down to the Dordogne river far below and out towards waves of hills receding into the Auvergne. If you take the riverside road towards Bergerac, you will see the feudal castle of Beynac crowning the cliff ahead of you with the village huddled below. There can be few places left which still creates a feeling of stepping into a medieval past. The gardens of Eyrignac near the manor are also worth seeing.
