Holiday Homes In France
Luberon Villa with Private Pool in the Vaucluse
Near Gordes, in the Luberon, Provence, South of France
3 bedrooms, sleeps 6 people
The villa has as much charm as it has modern comfort and perfectly reflects this beautiful corner of Provence. It is set in countryside beside a vineyard close to Gordes, one of the loveliest villages in the Luberon National Park, about 30 kms from Avignon. The markets of the Vaucluse are a riot of colours and smells with stalls piled with fresh vegetables, melons and cherries, sometimes musky scented truffles, ripe cheeses and a dozen different kind of olives. Other stalls have pottery bowls and plates, brightly coloured cotton fabrics or lavender honey and crystallised fruits, and yet others with plants and flowers. Occasionally you come across local country antiques markets or an open air art exhibition.
The villa has been made as comfortable and welcoming as possible, the large, azure pool is made for lazing around and the long, hot summer for outside living and a relaxed way of life.
The ground floor of the house has an open plan living room with beams, honey coloured stone walls and a fireplace. There is a large, monastery dining table and two sofas, a large screen television, DVD and video. The kitchen is typically provencal in style with hand painted furniture and doors opening into the garden. Equipment includes an oven and hob, dishwasher, hob, a combined oven and microwave and a fridge/freezer. Next to the kitchen is a utility room with a washing machine, ironing facilities and various appliances.
One of the three bedrooms is a double room on the ground floor. There is a ground floor bathroom with shower next to the bedroom and a separate wc. Upstairs are two other double bedrooms leading off the mezzanine that share a bathroom with bath.
Outside are two garden tables with benches, sun loungers around the pool, a barbecue and garage parking for two cars. There are any number of restaurants to choose from, but one of our favourites is the Moulin du Clos de Jeannons in Gordes, for their tapenades.
Cycling is a great way to really see and discover tucked away places in the Luberon and there are marvellous walks in the Dentelles de Montmirail hills. Within a short drive is a golf course, tennis courts and canoeing on the Sorgue river. The Sorgue also has good fishing (mainly brown trout). Balloon flights over the Luberon can be arranged in Gordes.
Some of the prettiest villages are within an easy drive; Saignon, Roussillon and Lacoste or Bonnieux tucked high above the Cavaillon valley. Lourmarin is one of the most attractive villages in the Luberon. Many writers and artists have lived here, among them Albert Camus, who is buried in the village cemetery. The village has a reputation for good restaurants, including Edouard Loubet's Le Moulin, which in 1999 won its second Michelin star and Reine Sammut's La Fenière (Michelin one-star). It also has wickerwork, pottery and fabric shops. Gigondas produces one of the best Côtes du Rhône wines and has more than forty vineyards to choose from.
The road leaving Apt via the Pont Julien, one of the best preserved Roman bridges in France, leads you to Saint Rémy de Provence, the birthplace of the astrologer Nostradamus. You can visit the Musée Alpilles Pierre de Brun in a 16th century château, which chronicles his life, or you can visit the astrologer's home at Maillane, 4 kms away. Saint Rémy also has several good restaurants.
Avignon, apart from theatres, cinemas, shops and some excellent restaurants, has a wealth of ancient treasures, from the splendour of the Palais des Papes and the palace gardens, to the famous old Pont St Bénézet.
