Charming Chambres d'Hôtes Bed and Breakfast with pool
Lavaur, 35 kms from Toulouse, in the Tarn, Midi Pyrénées
3 rooms and a family suite with private bathrooms
Le Domaine de la Buissardière
La Buissardière is a 19th century maison de maître built of the brick and stone that is typical of the Tarn. Lavaur is a village 35 kms from Toulouse, in what is known locally as the the Pays de Cocagne, the Land of Plenty, at the centre of the triangle between Castres, Albi and Toulouse. We have four Bed and Breakfast rooms here, two double bedrooms, one room with a double and a single bed and a suite with two double bedrooms.
The house and garden has all the atmosphere and charm of a bygone age and the names of the bedrooms reflect this. Each one has personal paintings, hand embroidered cotton sheets and a lovely sense of repose. Other parts of the house have been sensitively furnished and decorated in keeping with the style of the period, scattered with hand painted porcelain, chandeliers and other embroideries.
The pool has several wrought iron sunbeds in keeping with the period of the house and the park and garden has a beautiful collection of English and Old roses. There is also a Curate's Garden full of flowers and aromatic herbs.
Jean de La Fontaine is on the ground floor. A large room with a double bed, table and chairs, an armoire and a bathroom with a shower and wc.
Comtesse de Ségur is on the first floor, a large double room with a single bed, an armoire and a table and chairs. It has a bathroom with a shower, washbasin and wc.
George Sand is also on the first floor and has a double and a single bed, table and chairs, an armoire and a bathroom with shower.
Victor Hugo is a suite on the first floor with a twin bedroom, a small hall with a shower room and a large double room that has a table, chairs and an armoire.
All the bedrooms have television and there is a salon/dining room with a fireplace and a hi-fi available to our guests. Breakfast is usually served either in the dining room or outside in the garden on fine days. There is also private parking. You can walk into Lavaur from the house, to the cathedral and a choice of restaurants, or to the Wednesday and Saturday morning markets.
Within a radius of 20 kms are little villages like Magrin, which has a château museum with a collection of pastels, Graulhet has a number of restaurants and a leather craft museum, Giroussens is a potters village, which has a regular market selling contemporary pottery and also has a lovely park to wander through. Fiac and Palmola both have golf courses, there are several riding stables and the local ULM airfield can arrange lessons or a flight over the countryside.
Within 40 kms is Castres, home to the Goya Museum, which has a wonderful collection of his paintings and many good shops and restaurants (including an excellent fish restaurant). Toulouse is the red brick city, young and lively, full of art galleries, museums and elegant shops, and a passion for rugby. The Gaillac vineyards have been producing wines for more than a thousand years. The town holds a wine festival in August and there are many places where you can sample and buy the local wines.
Within 60 kms is Albi. The rosy pink bricks in the old part of the city give it a soft, dreamy atmosphere, the elegant squares with fountains and cafes are ideal places to sit a while, after a stroll around the old streets of the pedestrian shopping area. The cathedral of Sainte Cecile towers over the central square and the Toulouse Lautrec museum on the bank of the River Tarn also has beautiful gardens. Cordes-sur-Ciel is a marvellous medieval town that sits on a hill in the plain near Albi. Steeped in the history of the Cathars and once known as a centre for fine embroidery, it has numerous artisan shops and galleries tucked away in the narrow streets and several good restaurants.
