Chateau des Noyers
This lovely 18th century château lies beside the River Layon at the heart of its own vineyards, which produce some of the best wines in Anjou. It is a house where the charms of a bygone age harmonise with luxurious present day comforts and a delightful place to stay, to enjoy something of our way of life for a while.
Martigne-Briand is in the Layon Valley, where wine making is both a religion and a way of life, about 35 kms from Angers and Saumur. Wine barges have been traditionally used for centuries as a means of transporting wine and they still tie up beside the island on which the château stands, to load the wine and then make the long journey back along the Loire river to their various destinations. We make our wine from the Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon and Grollet grape from the vineyards that surround the house and it is recognised as one of the premiere appellations. Our Coteaux du Layon liqueur is also well known and has won several awards.
A vaulted interior stone staircase leads to the bedrooms on the first and second floors and downstairs to the billiard room and the smoking room and library, and also to the original château kitchen with its huge fireplace. The ground floor has a large drawing room and a dining room, both with enormous fireplaces, lovely beamed ceilings and ancient tiled floors. The whole house is elegantly furnished with period family furniture.
There are four magnificent bedrooms on the first floor, each with canopy beds and exquisitely decorated in a different style. The two suites on the second floor are large and sumptuous. All the rooms have views across either the park or the river, private bathrooms, television and hi-fi, a safe, hairdryers and a telephone.
There is a heated swimming pool and tennis court in the grounds and we would be delighted to show you around the vineyard and sample our wine. We highly recommend Le Prieuré, a restaurant 25 kms from here.
Within a radius of 25 kms are golf courses, riding stables and a balloon base, which is a marvellous way to see the countryside. There is a wonderful rose garden walk 15 kms from here and a medicinal and aromatic herb garden at Chemille 20 kms away. The oriental park in Maulévrier is also worth a visit.
Château de Brissac, also in the Layon valley, dates mainly from the 17th century, flanked by round 15th century towers and is lavishly decorated inside and out. An added pleasure is tasting some of the wines in the 11th century cellars.
The medieval centre of Anger has many fine buildings clustered around the cathedral, though it is the massive, moated castle that towers over the town. There are formal gardens in the moat now and a herd of fallow deer, but its unique collection of tapestries are worth a visit alone. Saumur is the main centre for sparkling wines made in the same way as champagne, which you can taste at a number of wine houses. It is also the home of the famous Cadre Noir cavalry, which gives a spectacular display of riding skills in July. At other times you can visit the stables and watch them in training.
