Traditional House with infinity pool in the Lot
Saint Bressou, near Figeac in the Midi Pyrenees, South West France
4 bedrooms, sleeps up to 9 people

Fenoul is an 18th century Quercy stone house, a beautiful example of the traditional architecture of this part of Southwest France, which blends harmoniously into the surrounding wooded hills. Saint Bressou is close to the village of Cardaillac, which has a grocery store that has most essentials and a boulangerie. Lascapelle-Marivelle, 8 kms from here and Figeac, 12 kms, or Gramat, 25 kms, all have a greater choice of shops and facilities, including cafés and restaurants.

This area of the Lot is full of surprises; the Causses, high, wildly beautiful limestone plateaux and narrow gorges give way to gentle green valleys crossed by streams with pretty country villages, other villages clustered on the river bank or perched high on the cliffs. Figeac stands near the confluence of the Lot and Célé rivers and has an attractive old centre, partly pedestrian with a colourful weekly market in the central square.

The main house has a large, beamed living and dining room and a separate kitchen equipped with, amongst other things, a dishwasher, fridge, oven and hob and microwave. There is also a laundry room.

There are three bedrooms, two double and one with three single beds, a bathroom and a shower room. The fourth double bedroom is independent of the main house and also has a small sitting room and shower room.

The garden is peaceful, full of the green scent of grass and leaves, the silence broken only by bird song or the chorus of cigales on hot days. The infinity pool is large, (13 x 6 metres) and terraced and there are sunbeds, outside tables and chairs and a barbecue.

The Area

There are numerous GR rambling routes that can take you from Figeac to Souillac, Rocamadour and the Bouriane or through the magical Célé Valley (the scenery is best if you walk it from south to north). There are also hundreds of bridle paths marked in orange and local stables where you can hire horses suitable for every level of experience. You can hire canoes on the Lot and Célé rivers and learn to 'read' the water and there is good fishing on a network of rivers and lakes, which should suit fly and coarse fishermen of all standards.

Cardaillac, and Capdenac-le-Haut are just two of the picturesque villages close to Fenoul. Lost in time, the Célé river is shaded and dwarfed by tortoiseshell cliffs and flows past secluded hamlets and ancient châteaux. Worth a stop are villages like Espagnac-Ste-Eulalie, Marcilhac and the Grotte de Bellevue close by. Further along are the extraordinary caves at Pech-Merle and about an hour from here is St-Cirque-la-Popie, undoubtedly one of the loveliest villages in France.
