Holiday Homes In France
Comfortable Bed and Breakfast near Paris
Vayres-sur-Essonne, 25 kms from Fontainebleau, in the Île de France
3 en suite double rooms and a children's room
The village of Vayres-sur-Essonne is situated near the river in the Parc du Gâtinais, a quiet, country like setting, 55 kms south of central Paris. Our house is very much a family home, comfortable, peaceful, surrounded by a large, enclosed garden with private parking and romote controlled gates, ideally placed to enjoy the pleasures of both the city and the country.
This part of the Île de France, where the Parc du Gâtinais meets the great royal park of Fontainebleau is covered in forests of ancient oaks and chestnut trees, a haven for wildlife and much loved by those who like to ramble and cycle. Fontainbleau itself is 25 kms from here. Just to the east of Vayres is the village of Barbizon, a favourite with several leading 19th century landscape painters, such as Millet, Rousseau, Monet and others, who were enchanted and inspired by the countryside around here.
We have four rooms altogether, three are double bedrooms with private bathrooms. The fourth bedroom is a children's room on the ground floor with three single beds. A cot can be provided on request.
A salon is available to our guests and there is a sauna, which may be used on request for a small extra charge. A washing machine, dryer and ironing facilities are also available.
A generous breakfast to start the day is served in the dining room and on fine days, on the terrace looking onto the garden.
There is a play area for children in the garden and you can pit your skills on the pétanque pitch. Bicycles are available for cycling through the forest.
A short walk from the house is the 15th century Château de Belesbat, which has an 18-hole International Golf Course and two restaurants.
Fontainbleau is a smart, cosmopolitan town at the centre of which, is one of the most beautiful and historically important of the royal palaces, which really needs more than a day to see and appreciate. The gardens, laid in the less formal style anglais favoured in the 19th century are worth a visit alone. The château is a wonderful blend of art and design through different periods, as it was altered and added to by successive monarchs. The interior takes you through the evolution of decorative style from the Renaissance to the Empire, from the graceful, early 17th century double staircase at the entrance, to Rosso's richly complex Michelangelesque decoration of the François I gallery, to Primaticcio's painting of the splendid ballroom, to the Throne Room and the Council Chamber, to Marie-Antoinette's bedroom.
On the western edge of the Fontainbleau forest is the attractive village of Milly-la-Forêt, which has botanical gardens with over a thousand species of aromatic and medicinal herbs and plants. The market is still held on the same day each week in the lovely 14th century covered market hall. The poet and artist Jean Cocteau decorated the interior of the Chapelle Sainte Blaise in 1959 and is now buried there. The magnificent Château de Courances near there is also worth a detour.
On the south-east edge of the forest, Moret-sur-Loing, beautifully situated on a wide stretch of the river just before it joins the Seine was where the English Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley lived and worked for twenty years.
