Holiday Homes In France
Lovely Chalet Apartment in the Savoie
Megève, near Chamonix in the Rhone Alps of Eastern France
3 bedrooms, sleeps 6/8 people
La Fruitière de Mégève
The apartment is in one of a group of three chalets, each with four apartments situated high on Mont d'Arbois, beside a stream. Megève (3 kms), one of the earliest and most fashionable of the ski resorts, has splendid views of the Mont Blanc range and is in a pleasant setting of gentle wooded slopes surrounding the valley. The centre of Megève is very attractive with a range of good shops and restaurants and excellent ski and sports facilities.
There is a choice of ski runs less than 300 metres from the chalet and in summer, this is wonderful country for walkers and golfers. Megève has a toboggan run and both indoor and outdoor ice rinks with ice cars, and also indoor and outdoor swimming pools for all year round use.
The Swiss and Italian borders, Chamonix, Saint Gervais and Mont Blanc are all within reasonable driving distance.
The apartment is beautifully designed and decorated in traditional Savoyard style with wood floors throughout and is equipped with all modern comforts. There is a living room with a fireplace, television with CD and DVD incorporated and hi-fi, leading into to a fully equipped kitchen and dining area with a table that seats eight people. The kitchen has an oven and hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. Telephone and Wifi broadband Internet connections are also provided.
There are three bedrooms with private bathrooms and a mezzanine with a single bed. One of the bedrooms also has a sauna, which can accommodate four people.
The apartment has a terrace with outside furniture and access to the chalet garden. There is garage parking for your car and bicycles and communal laundry facilities with a dryer.
Apart from skiing during the winter, there is a good golf course a short walk from the apartment, numerous trails to walk or cycle and hang-gliding or ballooning over the peaks. There is also a heliport nearby.
Megève has a wonderful market each Friday with fresh fruit and vegetables and local cheeses and there are several restaurants with excellent menus.
The river Arly meanders down from Megève into the cheese country of the Beaufortin, through dark wooded gorges. Albertville has a couple of highly recommended restaurants and an old walled town which is pleasant to walk around.
From Chamonix (30 km) you can take a cable car up to Aiguille du Midi, an astonishingly engineered climb to over 3,860 metres taken in two stages, the second of which is spectacularly precipitous. From the middle station there are walks down to Chamonix. At the top, you may notice the sudden change of altitude and temperature, there are breathtaking views across the chain towards Mont Blanc. This is where climbers set off from to climb a 1000 metres higher still. In good weather, the lift will take you across the glaciers of the Vallée Blanche to the Italian side of the chain. There are other cable car rides from Brévent and Flégère and a rack railway from Montenvers.
Argentière and Le Tour are attractive old villages with lots of character and each has a glacier and ski facilities. Le Lavancher is an especially charming hamlet with ancient chalets and superb views. The old spa town of Saint Gervais on Mont Blanc's western shoulder has some marvellous trips either on foot or by car, cable car or train. Among the finest is the road up to Le Bettex and then the cable car onwards to Mont d'Arbois. Annecy is 30 km from here.
