Apartment in Le Touquet, Pas de Calais
30 minutes from Boulogne and Calais, 2 hours from Paris
3 bedrooms, sleeps 4/6 people
Le Paddock
The house is quietly situated in a pleasant garden just outside Le Touquet, two kilometres from the beach. Le Touquet (1.5 kms) lies at the mouth of the river Canche surrounded by woodland and is a lively, elegant town with lots of shops and restaurants, casinos, cinemas and sporting facilities with a pretty seafront promenade.
The apartment makes an ideal base for a snatched week or two stocking up the cellar and larder or pottering through the village markets and lingering over a seafood lunch, playing golf (Le Touquet has three very good courses within five minutes) or just enjoying the beaches with the children. Simply and warmly decorated, the apartment is comfortably furnished with carpets and cushions and has a sunny south facing living room with a large bay window. The kitchen is fully equipped, including an oven and hob, dishwasher and refrigerator and there is a hallway with a wc. Upstairs are two double bedrooms, one double, the other a twin, and a small bedroom with a single bed and a fold up bed, suitable for an adult or two children. The bathroom has a bath, washbasin, shower and wc. There is also electric heating for the winter months. The garden is shady and pleasant if you feel like a quiet day here. The Area
Le Touquet's heyday was in the 1020's and it has a very English feeling about it, which a lot of its architecture reflects. Of the golf courses, Le Manoir is an attractive nine-hole (no handicap), La Forêt, thick with trees has a handicap of 35 and La Mer is a links course where the French Open was played (handicap 24 men and 28 women). The region is rich with picturesque towns and villages, which have an undeniable charm and are lively in summer and pleasantly quiet and local in winter. There are numerous churches and abbeys and châteaux to visit; St-Saulve in the 17th century town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, is one of the finest Gothic churches in the Pas-de-Calais. There is a bird sanctuary in Marquenterre in the Baie de Somme and in Boulogne, Nausica, France's official National Marine Centre, cleverly manages to put marine life in a broad context while injecting plenty of 'wow' factor. Exhibits include a touch tank, where you can tickle a ray's tummy, a tropical lagoon complete with beach bar, and an outdoor sea-lion pool and a coral reef. Very popular with children. For lunch try the excellent seafood restaurant. There are a variety of restaurants within a reasonable drive and at the little fishing port of Étaples (3km) you can buy fish directly from the boats, or at the Monday and Thursday markets. There are lots of places to walk and cycle and on the beaches you can wind and speed sail, swim and fish in the sea. There is also fresh water fishing in a lake 10 kms from here and a very good health centre in Le Touquet, where you can spend a day having therapeutic treatments. Travel Information
