Provence has always been much loved for its flowers and fruits, its painters and potters, fabrics and bookshops, the olive groves between the Alpilles and the Crau hills and in the Beaux Valley, as well as for its cuisine; aioli and anchoïade, bouillabaisse fish soup, tapenade, hearty fish stews and the Côtes du Rhône wines, such as Châteauneuf du Pape. Local vineyards and olive oil mills are on the doorstep.
St Rémy de Provence (6 kms) was where the astrologer Nostradamus was born and where van Gogh lived for the last few years of his life. Les Baux-de-Provence is an ancient village with a great romantic past, strikingly situated on a great crag of rock with fine views from the castle towards Arles and the Camargue.
Avignon (14 kms) is a beautiful university town with much to see, the vast Palais des Papes in particular, which has smart shops, markets, numerous restaurant and cafes and a huge music and theatre festival in July, amongst a succession of other events throughout the year.
Ancient Arles (16 kms) and its associations with the painter Vincent van Gogh, inspired the designer Christian Lacroix in many of his creations. It is the gateway to the Camargue, a vast protected reserve, which is home to flocks of pink flamingos, passing migratory birds and herds of wild horses. Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue has beaches and good seafood restaurants and holds a huge Summer festival annually with lots of music and dancing.
