Elegant Manor House in the Loire Valley
Artannes-sur-Indre, 15 minutes from Tours, in the Indre et Loire
7 bedrooms, sleeping from 2 to 14 people. Private Fishing.
Le Manoir de la Mothe
Dating from the 15th century, the manor is in Artannes-sur-Indre, a village in the Indre river valley, 15 minutes from Tours, close to Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry and Langeais, some of the most famous châteaux in the Loire. Once the home of the Archbishop of Tours and later of General Maginot, the house is set in three hectares of gardens with centuries old trees, beside the River Indre. There is absolute peace and quiet here, broken only by the cry of a heron or the hoot of an owl. Paris is an hour from Tours by TGV train.
Artannes has a restaurant and a range of shops including a supermarket for daily needs within walking distance and there are local markets twice a week in Monts and Montbazon. For a greater selection, Tours has everything you could possibly want. Of the numerous restaurants to choose from, we would highly recommend the Auberge du XIIème siècle in Saché and the Aigle d'Or in Azay le Rideau. The entrance of the house leads to the salon, which has a grand piano. The dining room can seat up to 40 people and opens onto a large terrace overlooking the river. On the right is a cosy bar room, to the left, a passage leading to the kitchen. The kitchen is traditional in style but equipped with all modern conveniences. The utility room opens into the garden. There are also two downstairs wc's and the house has television, DVD and a hi-fi system.
The period staircase leads up to bedrooms on each landing. The first landing has a suite of two bedrooms, one double, the other a twin that share a bathroom and another twin room with a washbasin and wc. On the second floor is a double room with an ensuite bathroom and the library, which has two spare single beds if needed. The third floor has a double room with a bathroom and a twin room with a shower room. Back stairs also lead to two of the bedrooms. A hairdryer and a cot are available on request. The River Indre bordering part the garden has pike, pike/perch, carp, eels and other small fish. There are 4 tiny private islands in the middle of the river. A rowboat is provided. On hot days, you can swim in the river, play football in the park and we have various games such as a pool table in the library, table tennis, boules and badminton. There is covered parking for cars and garden furniture and a barbeque are provided.
The Area
There are tennis courts, a swimming pool, mini golf and various other sporting activities within minutes of the house and an excellent golf course 7 minutes away by car. The manor house in Saché, where Balzac stayed, is 2 km from here. The châteaux of Azay le Rideau, moated by the Indre and Villandry with its beautiful gardens, are 9 km, Langeais and Rigny Ussé, said to be the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty, are 20 km from here. Tours has been in existence since before the Romans and is today, a cosmopolitan university town with a relaxed atmosphere with a lovely old centre around the Place Plumereau, cafés, chic bars and clubs. There is always an event going on somewhere, concerts, exhibitions, theatre. The shops include tempting food shops and a range of other specialist shops from fabrics to antiques. The vineyards of Chinon, Bourgeuil, Azay le Rideau, Montlouis et Vouvray are all within easy driving distance. Other restaurants worth trying are: La Cascadéenne in Artannes, l'Auberge des Moulins in Monts and La Chancelière in Montbazon. We can recommend many others. Travel Information
