Charming Farmhouse Cottage with pool
Beaugas, near Cancon on the edge of the Dordogne, South West France
2 bedrooms, sleeps 4 people
Chazarem is situated deep in the heart of the countryside, with views across a peaceful wooded valley dotted with fields of sunflowers, corn and vines, near the little hilltop bastide village of St Pastour (2 km). Built over two hundred years ago, the cottage is adjacent to the main house and has been recently restored in keeping with the traditional style, retaining many of the old features. It was originally a storage barn for barrels of wine and has also been used to dry tobacco and to store plums.
All around you can find sleepy little hilltop bastide towns built in and around the 13th century. Most have attractive arcaded squares where you can sit and enjoy a drink and/or a meal in a peaceful atmosphere. However once a week on market day, they become busy, bustling places with stall holders selling their produce. Everything from honey to tourtières (the local apple pie), dried fruits and olives, gleaming plump vegetables, colourful fruits, chickens, ducks, and rabbits, cheeses, salamis and more.
The cottage has a comfortable open plan living room with a fully equipped kitchen, including a microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. It opens onto a private terrace where you can eat, overlooking the swimming pool and the valley beyond. There are two bedrooms, one twin and one double, and a bathroom with shower. A laundry room adjacent to the cottage is available. We welcome young children. A cot, highchair, plus other baby equipment are available at no extra cost. There is also a selection of toys, a sandpit and swing to help keep them amused!!
We have two rooms in the house, which can be combined with the cottage if needed. A comfortable double room downstairs and a twin room above in the beamed attic, leading from a private staircase. They share a bathroom and have their own entrance. Price on request.
We will be happy to cook supper for you, (€15 including wine), upon request, on the evening of your arrival.
The swimming pool (9m x 4m) has roman steps and is at the end of the main house alongside the cottage, looking over the valley. When not in use the pool can be protected by a safety cover to stop children falling in. This cover conforms to the French Safety Standards as set out by AFNOR. Badminton, tennis raquets and boules are available.
From our Visitors' Book:

'Wonderful Gîte, wonderful country, wonderful hospitality'.
Within 5 kms of us you can find tennis courts, riding stables, golf courses, swimming lakes. Within a reasonable drive, there is also good fishing in the lakes and rivers and boat trips and canoeing on the Dordogne and Lot rivers.
There are several good local restaurants within reach, St Pastour (2 km) being the nearest. Three or four course lunches start at €9 often with wine included, and all offer a fixed price 'menu de jour' at lunchtime and a selection of differently priced menus in the evening.
Local produce abounds and confit de canard and magret de canard are very much a local speciality along with pâté, rillettes, plums, prunes and nuts. The countryside is peppered with plum orchards, which ripen for picking around the middle of August. The bulk of these are taken to be dried or half-dried to make the prunes for which this area is famous (try the chocolate covered ones!). They are used in many local dishes along with hazelnuts, walnuts and chestnuts and Cancon is considered to be the hazelnut centre of France.
The wines of the region are all around us, Bergerac, Cahors, Duras, Buzet and Bordeaux. Nearby there is a small vineyard where you can buy good red, white and rosé wines.
Cancon (5km) has all essential shops, including grocers, butchers, banks (ATM) and bakers.
St Pastour (2km) has a tiny grocery where you can get fresh bread, croissants and eggs every day.
Villeneuve-sur-Lot (15 km) is our nearest large town and has pedestrian shopping and many cafés and restaurants. There are two large hypermarkets on the outskirts.
