Comfortable 14th Century Cottage with Private Fishing
Langeais, near Tours, in the Loire Valley, Central France
1 bedroom, sleeps 2, 3 or 4 people
The Domaine de Vernou lies in a thousand acre estate in the heart of the Loire Valley about 4 km from Langeais, which lies on the banks of the River Loire, 28 kms downstream from Tours. The beauty of the Loire with its fine châteaux and ancient walled towns, its rich cuisine and the vineyards that produce some of the country's most famous wines, is legendary. Visits to the vineyards at Bourgueil, Chinon, Saumur and Vouvray are welcomed. We will be happy to help with anything you need to know.
Vau Godet is privately situated away from the manor house and a comfortable base from which to explore the region, work undisturbed, or simply relax, contemplate and do some fishing. In front of the cottage is a lake, about a hectare in size, which is reserved exclusively for our guests. The lake has mainly tench, pike, perch and roach, a row boat is provided and there are a maximum of four places to fish from to ensure a peaceful environment. There is no charge and no license is necessary.
The house has been furnished with antique country furniture and carpets, charm and comfort. The ground floor has a large beamed sitting room with a dining area, which still has the original fireplace and which opens onto a terrace with views towards the lake and parkland. There are two single divan beds if needed, television and video, a hi-fi system and a direct phone/fax line. The kitchen is very modern and fully equipped with an oven and hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and other appliances.
The first floor has a large beamed double bedroom and a very comfortable bed with a good mattress, a study area, a dressing room and a bathroom with bath, double wash basins and a washing machine. There is also a library of about 500 books in the old study, television and two telephones.
The basement has a bathroom with shower, separate wc and a dressing room. Other facilities include central heating, an alarm system, lighting on the terrace, garden furniture, a barbecue and table tennis. You are welcome to wander anywhere you wish and there are numerous walks through the woods and fields, where you can gather wild strawberries and mushrooms in season and pick raspberries, cherries, plums and apples, walnuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts. Fresh farm eggs and homemade honey and jams are also available.
Langeais has all essential shops, several restaurants and a market on Sunday morning. There is a lake with windsurfing facilities, tennis courts and a swimming pool and riding stables where you can hire horses for an hour or two or for the day. Within a reasonable drive are three 18 hole golf courses. Bicycles can be hired locally for long or short periods.
Château de Villandry just south of Langeais is more famous for its lovely Renaissance gardens than for its château. The ornamental gardens and water gardens, exquisite fruit, vegetable and herb gardens, are all created in a series of symbolic, geometric designs. South of Villandry is Château de Candé, where Edward and Mrs Simpson were married. Heading back towards the west is graceful Azay-le-Rideau, which stands on a lake and is possibly one of the most romantic château in the Loire, though Château d'Ussé a little further on, inspired the story of Sleeping Beauty. Each needs at least day to see, combined with a good lunch.
Tours (28 kms), is a lively university city with a cosmopolitan atmosphere, a range of tempting shops, dozens of restaurants and cafés, fine boulevards and buildings and a lovely old quarter around the Place Plumereau. There are markets of some kind going somewhere in Tour almost every day of the week, from food to antiques and flower markets.
